The project is a transformation of an industrial building owened by the publishing company Forlagið, which already housed a warehouse and a bookstore. The goal was to consolidate all the company's operations under one roof by designing and office area in the building. The existing building is a raw, industrial space with generous ceiling heights. The design aimed to create a comfortable and inspiring workplace for staff across a wide range of roles—including graphic designers, cartographers, editors, bookstore staff, and warehouse personnel—while also providing welcoming spaces for bookstore customers and public events.
Reusing existing furniture prevented 15.5 tonnes of CO₂ emissions from production of new furniture and disposing of the old. Additional carbon savings were achieved through the reuse of carpet tiles and other building components. Locally produced pumice lava blocks were used for interior walls and that meant up to 50% lower CO₂ emissions than conventional interior wall systems.
