Located on a plot in the middle of a lava field, the project was designed around use of natural materials that exist on site and reuse of building materials found nearby. Rather than treating the excavated lava rock as waste, our proposal was to reuse it on site as structural elements, columns, and cladding for the building’s first floor. For the upper floors, we proposed reusing discarded or defective hollow-core slabs that would otherwise have been thrown away, cutting them in half and using them as cladding. Windows salvaged from a nearby demolition project would also be reused in the building.
The overall concept and project goal were to minimize emissions associated with the production of new materials by using locally sourced waste and salvaged materials, reducing the need for transportation, and creating a project that is closely connected to its location and context.
