Flexibility, adaptability, and reusability are important factors when constructing new buildings to ensure they can adjust to changing operations and new uses. This circular building is an innovation project developed with and for BM Vallá, and temporarily houses the company’s sales department in the Höfði district of Reykjavík.
It was designed according to circular economy principles, utilizing precast units bolted together to allow for easy disassembly, relocation, and reuse elsewhere. The design and detailing of building components—such as exterior walls, interior walls, and the roof—were designed for disassembly and reuse. Given that a building's structural system typically accounts for the largest share of its carbon footprint, the project utilized more eco-friendly concrete containing CEM II cement, which reduces the carbon footprint by nearly 20% compared to conventional concrete.
