The project focuses on society a hundred years from now, where Icelanders have learned to control lava flows and use molten lava as a building material for structures, infrastructure and entire cities. Just as steam power transformed Icelandic society in the 20th century, the use of lava has become the basis for construction that reduces the energy-intensive and destructive production of building materials and utilizes local energy resources.
The vision is not presented as a prophecy but as a research tool. It outlines the potential development of science and technology and defines the research projects that need to be worked on today to make such a future possible. These include material research on lava as a building material, analysis and control of lava flows using 3D models, and the development of energy solutions that use geothermal energy and lava for building materials.
