Frakkastígur 1 is an innovative architectural project within the Icelandic context. The project addresses the challenges of climate change connected to the construction industry. Through reuse of materials and innovative application of local building materials it succeeded in significantly reducing the building’s carbon footprint. Icelandic architecture must respond to demanding natural conditions, including extreme weather, the North Atlantic environment, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions. These conditions place considerable strain on building materials.

Frakkastígur 1 shows that it is possible to build with reused materials without increasing costs or radically altering conventional construction methods. At the same time, these materials bring history, character, and narrative into the architecture, creating a richer and more meaningful environment for everyday life. It´s an example on how we use our projects to investigate the systemic changes needed in architecture and construction to build futures that are resilient, regenerative, and deeply connected to place.
